Everyone’s hurt in this western. Women have no purpose other than to bring children into the world through their bodies or helping another woman do so. Men own everything including women and the rights to having their child by a year into a marriage. If they don’t have a child it’s the woman’s fault and she gets labeled a witch. This is a western that flips the outlaw idea aka calamity Janes but it’s still a western and outlaws still rob, hurt and kill people to get by. I liked some of it for awhile but it started to Get old and at under 300 pages it felt too long.Everyone’s hurt in this western. What a creative and good writer and narrator Hanks is. I liked all but one of the stories and the one I didn’t like was about sports which I don’t like to read about.

I was aware of the controversy surrounding this book before I read it but it is fiction and I read it on that level. If it were non-fiction I would expect it to be taken apart tooth and nail but it is an invented story based on 4 years of authors research. If I can relate to a character/s in any work of fiction than I'll follow their story to the end and if it is a good one I won't bother with the pedantic take that others may have formulated.
This is a good story but it is way over the top dramatic and sometimes I thought it was too much especially near the end. Is it the Grapes of Wrath for a generation? Uh, I won't go that far even if the book cover does.I was aware of the controversy surrounding this book before I read it but it is fiction and I read it on that level. I like the casting of this show so much and watching the interplay between characters. I think Brian Cox is perfectly cast as the patriarch of the Roy family empire. I liked the story line with the brilliant CEO of a rival media conglomerate played by Holly Hunter falling for Logan Roy.
It is a big bad filthy rich nasty bunch of backstabbing lovers and losers that is so far from my world that it works to step into theirs for a spell. What I liked best about this new version and/or the prequel to what became Perry Mason with Raymond Burr was the setting. Much of it was shot in my hometown of San Pedro, California. It is a very noir and of the moment version as Perry is asexual, Della Street is gay and Paul Drake is Black. I did not like the evangelical centered story line too much and while I like Matthew Rhys I did not think he was perfectly cast as Mason. Maybe memories of Raymond Burr, with his deep voice and composure got in the way. Anyway San Pedro homies, take a look! What I liked best about this new version and/or the prequel to what became Perry Mason with Raymond Burr was the setting. What really makes a life worth living? It isn't only about success and achievement, notoriety, marriage, parenting, and those things many of us think matter the most. If we could see how any number of those reasons to live played out in our life, if we had a window open to those different choices would we still think they were what mattered most? The story takes on a metaphysical look at one person, Nora who has taken an overdose and is in the between place called The Midnight Library. Nora is like many of us full of regret, self loathing, that old not good enough script running through and through. She gets to step back into the stories of her life and when she does we the reader get to find out along with Nora what maybe really matters in the long run. An inventive and compassionate look at being human, being yourself. What really makes a life worth living? There is something missing in the overall execution of this film which made it feel impersonal. I honestly could not imagine why Max the cowboy fell in love with Rose. She may have been a grieving widow but it would be hard to tell since she seemed to lack emotion. I actually didn't get her or connect with what she was about. I thought James Brolin and the setting were good but Cybil Shepherd's Rose was someone that i would not be friends with. There is something missing in the overall execution of this film which made it feel impersonal. The setting in the Italian Alps is gorgeous and it's an interesting plot line with mistaken identity with identical twins BUT the main actress isn't convincing enough as someone who is trying to make her case that she is not her twin sister. She keeps getting deeper and deeper into having no one believe her while trying to convince everyone. However I just love the setting and the psychological professionals getting it all wrong. The setting in the Italian Alps is gorgeous and it's an interesting plot line with mistaken identity with identical twins BUT the main actress isn't convincing enough as someone who is trying to make her case that she is not her twin sister. What a shame that Crashing will not have a fourth season. I guess there is some talk about a full length feature but Pete Holmes was just about to make it to the echelon of his peers on the show. Anyway its great. I have never been a big fan of stand-up comedy because I hate to see comedians not get a laugh but this show and I've watched all three seasons is so funny and interesting. It was great to watch Pete grow as an adult and as a comedian. Everyone was funny and human and I highly recommend except for Kids. Pete Holmes may be considered a Christian comic but he gets down and dirty with most of the other comedians who cameo. And as far as the religious stuff goes he said it best that it was too restrictive and he couldn't be himself. He is a good man, a funny guy and if there is a God he would want Pete to be that perfect individual he created! What a shame that Crashing will not have a fourth season. I think I finally got why this book is aptly named the silence. I wasn't getting it at all and about 3/4 in ( and its a novella) I had an Ah- Hah moment. Now this is just my interpretation but I believe that the strangeness of the thoughts and conversations people are having have to do with their lack of preoccupation with electronic connectivity. It is almost like society has gone stream of consciousness or if you have ever tried meditating and your mind won't shut up it's like that. When we are preoccupied, entertained, edified and constantly dependent on our devices they are really what are in control and when we are left to our own device we are hapless, helpless and hopeless. We don't know what to do with ourselves. Also it was scary to think about the impact that loss would cause but I still wouldn't recommend this book simply because it isn't one written for a broad audience. That's my two virtual cents!I think I finally got why this book is aptly named the silence. I wasn't getting it at all and about 3/4 in ( and its a novella) I had an Ah- Hah moment. I think this movie isn't so much a science fiction as it is a metaphysical and spiritual look at the age old question of where we come from. It's a scientific fact that 93% of our body mass is stardust perhaps we return from where we came. Some may call it Heaven, some outer space but this film does a fine service to those ideas.

The scenes with her Dad are extraordinary and the chemistry between the priest and herself are a joy to behold. It made me fall in love with them! I hope this amazing talent Phoebe Waller Bridge will do something else with her genius for us in the future.Brilliant writing and a real life perfect ending to one of the best.

At first I was focused on the fact that Dr. Goodwin's (Ryan Eggold) mannerisms reminded me so much of George Clooney. The way he moved his head and mumbled a little, the twinkle in his eye distracted and annoyed me but then I got into this show and its many characters and I liked what I was watching. It has good drama story lines and way less gore then code black. The only thing I could do without is the relationship of the main character and his wife. She is way too perfect, coiffed and demure and says all the right things, so phony in my estimations where as I think the Dr. Goodwin character really means to be altruistic and on point when he ask "How can I help you"? It is a good question to ask in a hospital where often money is the main driving force. At first I was focused on the fact that Dr. Goodwin's (Ryan Eggold) mannerisms reminded me so much of George Clooney. I love the song Moon River no matter who sings it. The other standards here are done in the usual Taylor fashion, nice and easy. The song You've got to be carefully taught from the 1958 musical South Pacific by Oscar Hammerstein is timeless and was a good choice to promote tolerance something Mr. Taylor has been an advocate for since the beginning.
I also love the way James pronounces some of the words in these songs, cuddle for one and Mississippi for another.I love the song Moon River no matter who sings it.
