At the very beginning, a slick modern looking train races across the Western landscape and arrives at a small throw back town, symbolizing that social change is coming fast, ready or not. Instantly expect an important film when the antagonist, Spencer Tracy, steps off the train. Thought the character Hector looks familiar - a young Lee Marvin. All the actors are no longer living, but through the magic of technology and film archivists, we get to enjoy their work now and then.At the very beginning, a slick modern looking train races across the Western landscape and arrives at a small throw back town, symbolizing that social change is coming fast, ready or not. To the historian it's the Old West, to the book writer it's the Wild West, to the businessman it's the Undeveloped West -- they say we're all poor and backward, and I guess we are, we don't even have enough water. - *GRACE* p2 of 2 MCEVERS: GRACE is actually two satellites. As they approach an area that has just had a storm, for example, the extra weight of that water pulls the satellites. FAMIGLIETTI: So, as they approach this region that has more mass and therefore a greater gravitational tug, the first one gets pulled down and accelerates a little bit. Second one comes in, it gets pulled down, accelerates a little bit. So, the distance between the two changes. That’s the measurement that the GRACE Mission makes, it’s the position of the satellites. MCEVERS: In this way, GRACE can tell us the difficult truth about our aquifers. MCEVERS: In California, the groundwater took thousands of years to accumulate, and we are using this fossil water much faster than it can be replaced. Here in Arizona so much water has been pumped from underground that the ground has dropped and ripped apart.*GRACE* p2 of 2 MCEVERS: GRACE is actually two satellites. - *GRACE* p1 of 2 KELLY MCEVERS, Journalist: Many aquifers contain what’s called “fossil water,” and what that means is it took thousands of years to get here. It is not easy to follow the water that is hidden underground. But you might have seen these circles from a plane. With a metal straw and a diesel engine, we can reach aquifers 3000 feet down. Humanity started this kind of industrial pumping of water just a hundred years ago. And it’s been so successful nearly half the water used for farm irrigation comes from underground. This water grows almost one fifth of the world’s food supply. We have been draining aquifers with little idea of how much water is in them—until now. When Jay and his colleagues launched GRACE—which stands for Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment—they designed the system to do the impossible: to see into the Earth’s crust, using gravity.*GRACE* p1 of 2 KELLY MCEVERS, Journalist: Many aquifers contain what’s called “fossil water,” and what that means is it took thousands of years to get here. This film picks up from the final scene of BB's series ending Season 5 showing Jesse Pinkman driving off in Todd's El Camino. Despite been a big fan of BB, I cannot readily remember and associate with all the here-and-there flash backs from the TV series that are sort of extended or deleted scenes of the TV series but integral to this film. Before watching, suggest to refresh these BB characters: Badger Mayhew, Skinny Pete, Ed Galbraith and Todd Alquist. This PG family comedy shows how some of the ladies might have made friends, and been educated by watchful nuns in the 1960s. - I'll miss you, Mary. -I'll miss you, too, you old nut. Thanks. === Well, Liguori... this is the last race... at Pimlico. === You, of all people, should know how strong she is. She didn't yield, Rachel. She chose. And I'd rather have one like Mary who chooses, than 100 who yield. You know, she has so much to give. All our sisters do, but Mary will give with joy and laughter. And defiance, I imagine. In fact, I have a feeling that someday, many people... even those in the highest places... will know that Mary Clancy came our way. She has some scathingly brilliant ideas. === You could've told me. Why didn't you tell me? -You don't know how much I wanted to tell you. I hope it's wonderful. Honest, I do. Boy, you'll make some crazy nun. Wherever did you get such an idea? Aren't you? - Heavens, no. Mary, this isn't just a club you resign from. You see, I'm going to the Philippines. There's a leper colony there and I'm going to teach the sick children. But suppose you get it? You're so beautiful. It's so unfair that they should send you to a place like that. -But I asked to be sent, Mary. They need teachers very badly. The disease is controlled and much less dangerous than people think. That's not important. The important question is: who are you? America has become a cruel and vicious place. We reward the shallowest, the dumbest, the meanest and the loudest. We no longer have any common sense of decency. No sense of shame. There is no right and wrong. The worst qualities in people are looked up to and celebrated. Lying and spreading fear is fine as long as you make money doing it. We've become a nation of slogan-saying, bile-spewing hatemongers. We've lost our kindness. We've lost our soul. A big budget film about the ancient (4th to 6th century AD) fictional folk heroine of Chinese history. Enjoyed the excellent set design, film locations and stylish martial arts. The addition of the controversial supernatural force of feminist Chi (Qi) and the timeless moral elements (Loyal, Brave, and True) are also good, though could use more panache and better special effects. Curious that the actors are all internationally well known ethnically Chinese stars (Jet Li is unrecognizable with all the makeup), all seem to speak English without discernible accent, while the director, producers and writers are all white people.
Note: Pay special attention to the beginning of the film about Chi that is pivotal to this version of Hau Mulan's legend.A big budget film about the ancient (4th to 6th century AD) fictional folk heroine of Chinese history. Summary:
The history of Macau's Golden Age (from IMDb):
Macau's return to Chinese sovereignty in 1999 ushered in that city's "golden age." By 2012, the value of Macau's gaming industry was nine times that of Las Vegas, and Macao had become the world's foremost gambling destination. During this period, a unique profession arose: "casino brokers," who provided Macao's gamblers with high-interest lines of credit, under-the-table bets, and other services. It was a high-stakes, high-reward business that made for more thrilling play, but amplified the risks for players, brokers and casinos alike. This heightened risk made gambling more exciting and more dangerous for the participants; it also impacted their interpersonal relationships and outlook on life. It was as if everyone involved were walking on a tightrope. By 2014, however, China's ongoing anti-corruption campaign had dealt a serious blow to the gaming industry in Macao, ending the golden age. This is the background against which our story takes place. The history of Macau's Golden Age (from IMDb):

A social drama about gambling addiction through the relationships between a Macau casino broker (叠码仔) and three men - her ex-husband and two male customers from mainland China. While the film does an excellent job to exemplify the human cost behind the glittery and opulent doors of those postcard perfect casinos, the messy entanglement between the broker and her customers are less convincing.
Blurb on DVD box:

- The Lake: Here's the situation. The perimeter of the lake is over 10 kms. This blank area on the map is an uncharted zone. It's one of those rural areas that remain in towns, a sort of enclave. 野鵝塘方圓十幾公里 地圖上面是沒有標注的 就是這片白色地帶 應該是最近幾年形成的城中村 有點像一塊飛地 Be well aware of the complexity of the lake area. It's a lawless place that no-one really controls. Especially in summer. You see all sorts. ... You find all kinds of people, professions and crimes. When it's warm, the "bathing beauties" appear. 844 minutes or over 14 hours of viewing time. Watched first 2 episodes and not sure if it is worthwhile to invest so much time in this uneven DC Comics character Batwoman, a cousin of Batman's alter-ego Bruce Wayne.

Watched the Hollywood 1999 version with Matt Damon titled The Talented Mr. Ripley a couple times and just getting around to watch this 1960 French original, first adaptation of Patricia Highsmith' s 1955 novel. But like most French crime films, it has a moralistic ending that differs from the spirit of the novel - bad guys get away with murder more often than not.
Note: The interview with Highsmith in the blu-ray disc is interesting and informative. Her unusual lifestyle helped her creativity as a novelist, and we are the beneficiaries.Watched the Hollywood 1999 version with Matt Damon titled The Talented Mr. Ripley a couple times and just getting around to watch this 1960 French original, first adaptation of Patricia Highsmith' s 1955 novel. An action thriller for fans of Lively and to a lessor degree of Law and Raza Jaffrey that tells the rise of an assassin, vengeance, a terrorist act and espionage. Sounds great but the film hurried too much in developing the killing skill of the femme fatale and allowed her to learn on the job. The result is a more vulnerable realistic character but less exciting and hence not rousing entertaining. Also, not too crazy with those POV sequences, such as the car/foot chases, that limit the spectacular film location shots in Loch Frey-Ireland, San Martín de Valdeiglesias-Madrid/Spain and Tangier-Morocco. Oh well! ... Lastly, out of place if not odd choices of songs in the soundtrack. An action thriller for fans of Lively and to a lessor degree of Law and Raza Jaffrey that tells the rise of an assassin, vengeance, a terrorist act and espionage. Two brothers are living beyond their means, and in sin. To get out of their money problems, they mastermind a "victimless" crime that has gone wrong, very wrong and it ends badly, very badly. See how each of the characters would fare before the dust settles. Besides the outstanding performance by Hoffman, the supporting stars, Hawke, Finney, and the very sexy Marisa Tomei, are outstanding in this messed up familial crime drama.

An intense police thriller over the course of one night in NYC. Boseman (November 1976 - August 28, 2020) portrayed a self-assured detective. - So where are you planning to keep me? -Luckily, there's many castles in our country. Unless you're talking about the Senate's Palace in the Luxembourg gardens, I am afraid you must be referring to one of your giant isolated castles in the country, where your kings died of boredom. === You're not even asking for my consent? -Your consent? I couldn't care less. And what if I refuse? -If you refuse, you'll have an accident, for example, in the elevator. The cable will snap, and they'll find you six stories down with your stiletto heels up your throat. See you soon, mademoiselle. === Do you really want to kill Njala? -Would that cause you a lot of pain? Well, no, that's not the point. But if you put one half of my sugar daddies in the closet, and kill the other half, I'll end up with nothing to wear! === The machine already started running. There's just screams, orders, targets. - I don't see any reason why you should live any longer! -My country needs me! No country needs a tyrant. Word of your death will trigger joy among your people. They'll dance in the streets. They'll burn you in effigy under the coconut tree of freedom. There'll be no regrets. -I have one, the regret of not having killed you. That I really regret! -I often ask myself why I didn't do it. Maybe for religious reasons? -No, I think I saved you in order to trade you in one day. But for what? You don't represent any value to me. -That's exactly what misled you thus far, your system of values-- the good, the bad, the kind, the evil-- in short, the general concept of values. Here we are, and we're heading toward the most simple solution. Unfortunately, for you, it's the final solution. === It took you French three revolutions and five republics to achieve some semblance of democracy, and you want me to achieve it in one day!I don't see any reason why you should live any longer! -My country needs me! - Am I going to die? -Yes... are you afraid? No, why? -Because I would be. That's because you'd go to hell. === You sold him! -No, sir, not sold, we gave him for free... for governmental reasons, usually that means for free. === Whatever the circumstance, he's got the "white ones". -Huh? It's a term used in chess. The white ones have the benefit of the offensive. He'll always be one step ahead. He'll pull some amazing tricks on us! He'll improvise everything. === They told me that Njala was a monster, that he had to be killed, that it'd be an honor to do it. I had foolish conceptions about honor and pride back then.
