This is a beautifully written memoir that left me wanting more, which is to say that the book felt abbreviated to me in a way that sometimes felt incomplete. It is absolutely true that this book is brave and bold; but for me, it was also missing an interiority that draws me to memoir in the first place.
I struggled a bit at the beginning of the book. To me, it didn't have the emotional grip that the book developed mid-way through and kept me until the end. Though the title and the marketing around the book's launch led me to believe the book was primarily about Ford's incarcerated father and their relationship, I found the heart of the book to be the writer's relationship with the women in her family and, ultimately, with herself.
