Jonny, a young Ojibwe/Cree person in Winnipeg learns that his step-father has died, and begins preparations for returning to the reservation for the funeral. Woven into this simple plot are detailed flashbacks, alternately amusing, shocking, poignant and heartwarming, from Jonny's life as a queer (two-spirited) native. I selected this title to fulfill the Read Harder Challenge category "a novel by a trans or nonbinary author," and dove into it blindly, which was a both surprising and captivating experience. One gets the feeling that the novel is semi-autobiographical, which adds to its pull.
