Naturally, since the man who apparently committed suicide is a friend of Superintendent Tallis and the death occurred on a railway, Inspector Colbeck and Sgt. Leeming are dispatched to prove the death is not suicide--which it isn't as it turns out. Then the problem becomes, who killed him. This becomes more of a village murder case, since the solution involves Inspector Tallis' friends' social connections. As usual things are not what they seem, but Colbeck figures it out in the end.
