'Days of Blood & Starlight' picks up shortly after the events of the previous book, finding Karou broken but serving the surviving chimaera, numbly resurrecting the fallen in new, progressively more fearsome soldiers. Her estranged love, Akiva, too, is a shadow of his former self, ashamed of his own actions and devastated by the destruction and slaughter he's witnessed, but seemingly helpless to halt the bloodshed between the two warring factions. With reluctance, both are executing the will of others, but seeking a means of escape. I enjoyed this second installment nearly as much as the first, although the pace dragged at times. Despite plot necessity, it's unfortunate that Karou and Akiva share very few scenes as they are so much stronger when together. A few events seemed contrived, existing only to create conflict, but overall I recommend this book, especially if you reveled in the first.
