The beginning of the film reminded me very much of the 2001 book "Slammerkin, by Emma Donoghue." This mini-series is adapted from Michel Faber's 2002 novel "The Crimson Petal and the White." A love story and relationships mainly of three characters: -worldly young prostitute Sugar -heir to a perfume business William -doll-like Agnes Per wiki: "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal" is a sonnet poem written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. It was first published in 1847, in The Princess: A Medley. (Towards the end of the sonnet is the relevant excerpt and quoted near the start of the final episode - see "Quotes")
