The protagonist, Smilla, is a transplant from Greenland living in Denmark investigating the death of a little boy in her building. I felt the author purposely disconnect the reader from the story line and from the protagonist in order to mirror Smilla's own sense of disconnect and otherness towards Danish society. This was further emphasized because the book is a translation. It is clearly a smart and well written literary thriller, but I do not feel that I was immersed in the story, instead I was only granted access to the sidelines. If you like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo you may enjoy Smilla's Sense of Snow.
