If I'm correct, this is the first Avey Tare solo record since Animal Collective began releasing such types of things. Preceded by bandmate Panda Bear's critically lauded Person Pitch (indeed a great album), this particular work, I believe, never received due accolades, which is just as well because such a thing rarely exists anyway. It's dark, and it was created cathartically (you can hear the movement as the work progresses), and it's arguably "amateur" in that the songs are somewhat minimalistic despite having multiple vocal layers (in the expected Animal Collective-y aesthetic of the time). I think in the interest of brevity here, that, for my money, this record hits the spots that people wanted so much and imagined they found with Person Pitch, but really have been hiding in the gloom here for the brave and open-minded few. Excellent work.
