When Virginia declared its secession from the Union in April 1861, Lee chose to follow his home state, despite his personal desire for the Union to stay intact and despite the fact that President Abraham Lincoln had offered Lee command of a Union Army. Apparently, he made the hardest decision in his life on which way he should step into---home state or the Union. Once he decided to go along with the South, his hair suddenly grew white. Since the end of the Civil War, it has often been suggested Lee was in some sense opposed to slavery. In the period following the war, Lee became a central figure in the Lost Cause interpretation of the war. The argument that Lee had always somehow opposed slavery helped maintain his stature as a symbol of Southern honor and national reconciliation. If you're an American history nerd, this film certainly gives you tons of enlightening and thought-provoking info.
