First, a disclaimer: "Ace of Cakes" contains no recipes, no decorating instructions and no advice on running a cake business. Instead, Duff and Willie Goldman discuss the origins of their hugely successful shop, Charm City Cakes, describe life on the set of the Ace of Cakes television series and introduce all the people that make the business and the show such big hits. This unconventional coffee table book will appeal mostly to fans of the reality series. Though perhaps they include so much prose that it borders on repetitive, the authors do articulately mix enthusiasm, humour and passion in telling their story. A huge assortment of photos accompany this prose, so many that each has to be smaller than one would expect in order to fit on the pages! The book even contains a fold-out of countless postage-stamp sized pictures of the cakes produced on the show. For the most devoted fans, a complete episode guide with summaries appears at the end of the book. Ultimately, "Ace of Cakes" documents its eponymous show in an off-beat, non-confrontational way, resulting in a cake-obsessed book made by cake-obsessed people for people who like to watch a show about the making of truly awesome cakes.
