Like many blockbuster action films, this one had a good premise.
But at nearly two hours in length, the film makers could have diverted more time that was spent on car chases and fights to deeper drama. Instead of presenting a fairly routine good/bad guys story.

Not one of Smith's better movies. The younger Smith looked very unnatural.

Worth seeing for the story, which struck me as very original. Worth skipping because the action is pretty formulaic and the CGI is really bad - "young" Will Smith looks like a video game character and it's just hard to not be completely distracted and taken out of the movie because of it.

A simple and decent story about redemption and personal growth, maybe blood thicker than water, but simple is the key.

For something that I knew would have a large dose of Will Smith aging effects, I was shocked at how bad it appeared visually. Maybe state of the art isn’t what I thought it was, but the effects were thrown in my face like an art exhibition asking me to judge the nature of art, when I just came for the free sandwiches. Here comes a prolonged and unnecessary close-up! And, nope, just mechanical and pasty and bad lighting and I don’t know what they were thinking. Maybe a production crew gave an elevator pitch they couldn’t deliver to get this movie in the can.

On top of that was a lot of action, old Will versus new Will in a fight to the death, but with a couple of extraordinarily bad scenes where body motion physics was laugh out loud, like I was watching cut scenes from Grand Theft Auto. That conflict grew confusing after the first shootout anyway, because everybody kept tapping out, or running away, or hiding, with very little suspense; other than wondering how the story would unfold as it did when a simple conversation would end it. There were no more surprises after the first 30min, and everything expected to happen did eventually happen.

The high points of the film were Mary Elizabeth Winstead, as trusty sidekick with Will Smith, trying to out-smartypants each other in conversation, but that never really went anywhere with Will of any age. Everyone felt very uncaring, in light of actions that were supposed to be driven by caring, and it was all cold and wooden by the end, not platonic respect but more like everybody just wanted to go their separate ways in order to live happily ever after.

Ehh ... essentially a good action film with a decent concept and a few surprises ... but doesn't totally hit it off. The CG enhanced actor/s in the fight scenes look only a little better than Legolas in LOTR01 who looked only a little better than Atari 2600 graphics. As for the overall concept that the story depends on .... I could buy it ... but I think I could buy it a bit better if this was made as a near-future sci-fi film. It didn't quite catch me because it seemed to suggest that it was a current-day sci-fi, but my suspension of disbelief just didn't adequately believe it.

(Warning, spoiler alert) Disappointing. The CGI on "young" Will is overwhelmingly creepy, the fight scenes are weirdly jerky and insanely, inhumanly fast (you're left wondering, again and again, are these guys supposed to be human or not), and the ending is just stupid (a 20-something cloned assassin, trained from birth by the most dystopic "parent", becomes somehow almost instantly just a totally regular "kid next door", hanging out with other kids, having a laugh, picking his uni courses, etc - and without even having been given his new non-assassin ID yet). This seemed like more of a cheap, rushed vanity project for Will Smith (see that guy? I was young, strong, and smooth skinned just like him not too long ago, remember?) than a well thought out movie of any real substance.

I've never really liked Will Smith. He was okay in Men in Black. And I think this was a pretty good movie. But can't stand these over the stupid top special effects. Instead of adding to the movie they now seem to spoil the movie..... Juvenile

Great idea on paper but it did not show on the screen. Terrible CGI.

Clay Verris: Look what we created. You were the inspiration for all this.

Henry: Why not just make whole army full of them?

Clay Verris: Why not? You should be flattered.

Henry: You should be dead.

Some quotes in IMDb but not these below:

So why not make a whole army of 'em?
-Yeah, why not?
===
Think how many American families we can spare. Nobody's son, or daughter would ever have to die. No vet comes home with PTSD and kills himself. We can keep the whole world safe without any actual grief, so... Who would I be hurting?

You pull that trigger and you gonna break something inside of yourself. That will never get fixed again. Don't. Let it go. Give it to me. You don't want those ghosts.
