I think that this is one of the better Maigret mysteries. A woman that Maigret had arrested for robbery and prostitution when he was a beat cop, appears at his office one day. She has followed his career and always remembered that he had treated her fairly and with respect. She is older and married to a safe cracker. He was breaking into a house when he discovers the body of a murdered woman, frantic he ran and left his tools behind. He had gone into hiding, and his wife had come to Maigret to tell him that her husband is a gentle man that would never hurt anyone. But when Maigret goes to the house, the dentist and his mother don't know anything about a dead body or any one trying to break into the house. The man's wife has supposedly left him to return to her family in Holland, but she never arrives. Was someone killed? Where is the body? Who did it? A very good mystery.

"The mysteries of the human personality are revealed in all their disconcerting complexity." Anita Brookner

Will be forever grateful to Penguin for reissuing the entire Maigret series. My favorite detective; all the action is psychological twists and turns.
