I read this book for novel study at school and found it was a lot more interesting than I thought! If I was to make the decision on my own I think I would have passed it up. Very interesting and exciting. I really enjoyed the twist!! This novel should be for older kids as it talks about some more adult topics like starvation, homelessness and death.

I have to say that I didn't enjoy this book very much. But, I ❤️ Haddix and her writing style, so I have faith that the rest of the series will be great 👍🏻

Once I started it I couldn't put it down. If you enjoyed this book and are eager for more you would like the rest of the series.

Good, fast-paced start to the series. Raises important issues of the value of life and personal identity, as well as social responsibility and government overreach.

“Sure you can be a coward and hope someone else changes the world for you. You can hide up in that attic of yours until someone knocks on the door and says, 'Oh, hey, they freed the hidden. Want to come out?' Is that what you want"
Luke didn't answer
"You've got to come, Luke, or you'll hate yourself the rest of your life. When you don't have to hide anymore, even years from now, there'll always be some small part of you whispering 'I don't deserve this. I didn't fight for it. I'm not worth it.' And you are, Luke, you are. You're smart and funny and nice, and you should be living life, instead of being buried alive in that old house of yours”

The main character is a third child Luke Garner. Normally this wouldn’t be significant, except that the government have made a law against having third children. Luke has normally been safe from a group of officials called the population police, but when the government chops down the forest behind his families farm to put in more houses. Luke finds that even his own house isn’t safe anymore. Luke is confined to his attic and he can’t even eat dinner with his Mom, Dad, two brothers; Matthew and mark. Luke is bored out of his mind when he discovers another third child in hiding! When Luke sneaks over to their house he finds he might be in up to his neck!!

Basically, the Government has prohibited every family from having more than two children, and Luke just so happens to be a third child in the Garner family. Read this book to find out the outcome of Luke's third child status! (Hint - It's not what you expect :P)

Luke Garner is a third child in a society that only allows 2 or less children per family. He is doing his best to hide, and conceal his identity. He is ok with it, until his parents start to become really overprotective. The woods are cut down, and the government built "Baron" homes. He starts to think there is more to his life than hiding, especially when he finds another third child, who is courageous and wants to change everything. A story that will dramactically change, in a good way.
