Opinion

From Library Staff

Ware wants to be "normal" and tries hard to change himself, but discovers that changing yourself to fit what others want from you isn't all it's cracked up to be. This is a great book about accepting yourself, chasing your dreams and never giving up on what feels right for you.

The book is ok, but I personally think it’s a bit confusing. I feel like I’m the only one who thinks that ;-; idk, you might like it

“ Here in the Real World” by Sara Pennypacker is by my favorite jfic author. A boy who marches to his own beat finds himself by recreating a medieval castle, living up to the knights’ codes, slowly making friends with a strange girl, and saving birds on their annual migration. Colorful characters, strong plot and setting, and great messages for all ages! I couldn’t put it down.

A heartwarming and sweet novel about loneliness and misfits, and what it means to be yourself and comfortable in your own skin when you find what you love.

Sara Pennypacker has given us such a gift in this new middle grade novel. Ware and Jolene are considered misfits by their peers and even some adults, but when they get together to solve a problem -- watch out, world! Told from 11-1/2-year-old Ware's perspective and spanning the length of one summer, we can vividly picture the beautification project he and Jolene diligently labor over day after day. Some of the best kid-lit grows out of similar situations where the kids have some latitude to decide on their own activities. I predict this will be on the list of Newbery nominees for the 2021 award. For readers who enjoyed "The Stars Beneath Our Feet" and "The Vanderbeekers and the Hidden Garden."
