If you like movies about narcissistic, controlling men who discard women with zero remorse, you'll love Phantom Thread. I thought the acting and costumes were excellent, but overall I wasn't a fan. And sadly Daniel Day Lewis's performance as Reynolds Woodcock in this film was his swan song. While I admired Woodcock's focus and dedication to his art of being a couturier, I didn't like how he treated people when things didn't go his way. If a breakfast guest would scrape toast a little too loudly while putting on butter, he'd throw a fit and it would ruin his whole day. I thought his love interest, Alma, played by Vicky Krieps, stole the show. She was able to make a crack in his self-centered world, but only a crack. There's a twist at the end, which added interest, but notenough for Reynolds Woodcock to redeem himself. Some people thought this was a masterpiece. I thought "meh."

Excellent movie. Once again, Daniel Day-Lewis has delivered a stellar performance worthy of a two-time Oscar winner. He does remind me of Ralph Fiennes.

Another DDL triumph. A spotless rendition of a complex life

A rather beautiful & appropriately stylish movie with an unexpected edge. Observations:
Have Ralph Fiennes and Daniel Day-Lewis morphed into the same person?
In more looky-likey news, don't Gina McKee (The Duchess) and Tammy the Briscoes Lady look strikingly similar.
Reynolds' car is a stunning vehicle. It's a Bristol apparently.
The score is slightly warped classical - bravo Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead.

Loved this absorbing, gorgeous tale - difficult characters, rich brother/sister dynamic, and sacrifice / compromise to and worship of a prickly and obnoxious talent. This is an evocative peek into a rigid household machine built to create, and a livelihood engine driven by a renowned dressmaker, as much as a romantic film. One admires the unwavering creative vision, but dislikes the jerk DDL creates - a masterful piece of acting.

a Gothic Romance with metaphysical pretensions, Daphne du Maurier meets Virginia Woolf, a not especially compelling combination

This brilliant film which is complex and sophisticated with profound messages will not appeal to mainstream audiences. P.T. Anderson's films are uncompromising and never conventional.
The acting is superb, unwavering and riveting right up to the end.

A boring, static quirky art film. I'd expect to see this at a film art theater in SF or Berkeley with most of the patrons wearing black.

The only film that ever made me feel like I had eaten a poisonous mushroom.

Quirky, but superbly acted and engrossing. Not for those who like their movies in neat packages with labels. It does require some patience, not playing all its cards at once and sometimes confusing you as to where it's going, but well worth it in the end. As good as Day Lewis is, Lesley Manville is spectacular in a role that is as ambiguous as the movie itself. Repeated watchings will resolve many of the questions you may have first time around.

Many interesting quotes from the film have been posted in IMDb ... thanks to the contributors. However, the film left out some good stuff from the extras that are as memorable:

From a deleted scene:

I never really like myself. I thought my shoulders were too wide. My neck was skinny like a girl. And I have no breasts. Except my hips are large than needed. My arms strong. But in his work, I became perfect. I feel just right. May be that’s how all women feel in his clothes.

Ingrid wears a renaissance inspired suit of slate blue wool serge. The tailored jacket featuring unique shoulder details is trimmed with charcoal gray plassementerie, and is paired with a romantic full skirt, the unique touch of a Cavaliers Cape lined in crimson silk, custom feathered hat and Cavalier-style embroidered kid leather gloves completes the look.
Ellie wears a daytime ensemble of moss green iridescent wool with a full-length coat and pencil-slim skirt, paired with a vibrant floral silk lining and matching print silk blouse. The outfit is finished with a matching green hat in a fine straw, an exclusive house of Woodcock sting-gray design.
Make way for Bonnie, she wears an evening gown of emerald green silk taffeta. The skirt held away from the hips with inverted tucks. The wonderful bodice is of black ribbon lace with a décolletage for displaying one’s favorite jewels.

Ellie wears a spring suit in a soft fog-colored wool in a subtle plaid, paired with a built-in waistcoat of straw colored lightweight herringbone wool. The lines of the cleverly cut jacket continue into the lines of the pencil-slim skirt.
And now it’s the turn of Alma who wears a renaissance inspired gala gown with matching evening cape rendered in smoked colored silk velvet with golden Hurd taffeta skirt and cape lining. The bodice' s front slashing details is set off with strings of graduated sead pearls and crystal accents.
Ingrid wears a dinner ensemble suitable for casual dinners with friends or first nights out on a tropical cruise. A romantic silk organza blouse and silk taffeta skirt, both in soft azure blue, are contrasted with black wool jersey bodice, shawl, belt and handbag. The result was an inevitable loveliness from the House of Woodcock.
