One by one the lighted windows went dark. The silhouette of the dead man could still be seen through the frosted glass like a Chinese shadow puppet. A taxi pulled up. It wasn't the public prosecutor yet. A young woman crossed the courtyard with hurried steps, leaving a whiff of perfume in her wake. Summoned to the dimly-lit Place des Vosges one night, where he sees shadowy figures at apartment windows, Maigret uncovers a tragic story of desperate lives, unhappy families, addiction and a terrible, fatal greed.

It was a clumsy, friendly Maigret, with a slightly vague look in his eyes who showed her into his office, indicating a chair bathed in light streaming in through the pale oblong window." "She sat and waited with a set expression." " The former ambassador, in his dressing gown, was loath to approach. He had realized this was an investigation by the public prosecutor's office. Besides, the body on the stretcher passed close to him. / ' What's going on?' he asked Maigret. ' A man's been murdered. Couchet, the owner of the serums laboratory.' "

This was the first Inspector Maigret book I have read. It is a short 147-page story, so I managed to finish it. I'd probably have given up if it was any longer. Not too much atmosphere, unlikable characters, and not much happening. That about sums it up...
