It's rare that I give a book this well written such a mediocre rating. It isn't just that the topic is gruesome (it is), or that the protagonist is annoying (he is), or that the ending is (well never mind, I don't want to ruin it for anyone). My problem is that I didn't enjoy the story.

I may be in the minority in that regard. Another person in our book club loved it so much that she is on her third read. It may be that she appreciates the "stupidest smart guy" she's ever read about. I'll say this about him - I wish I could find my tax receipts as easily as he can find missing bodies.

There was one redeeming quality for me; I got to geek out on scientific minutia as it relates to both academic research and crime solving. I just hope all of that wasn't fiction.
