In Seoul, an American army doctor forces his assistant to dump bottle after bottle of formaldehyde into the drain. The drain runs into the Han River, the major river running through the middle of Seoul. His only reason is that the bottles are covered with a layer of dust. Six years later, a food cart operator, Gang-du falls asleep every time his dad, Hie-bong, is away from the stand for more than a few minutes. Soon, his daughter, Hyun-Seo returns from school. Then a monster appears in the river and starts to attack the people lounging at its banks. Gang-du and Hyun-Seo are chased by the beast. Hie-bong tries valiantly to save his daughter, but the beast soon captures her and drags her away. They receive a call from the daughter's cell phone and try to rescue her from the large monster.

This is undoubtedly a very good film. But what impressed me about the movie was not how scary the monster was and It's not how intense the process of saving the little girl is, It's the brave choices made by this family of nobodies when in the face of danger and affection, and that's why the movie seems so relatable. The incompetence of the government in the film, the arrogance and ignorance of officials. The film shows the darkness of the whole society to this poor family, in the face of a difficult choice they are so helpless, but they did not hesitate at all because they'll do anything for their family. In the end, the little girl who was captured by the monster died, but the little boy she saved represents the inheritance of life. This is a very good movie, there are many metaphorical scenes in the film that are worth thinking about. But even after everything else, this is still a very good monster movie. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes monster movies. 4/5 stars

Good actors but dumb story. I actually drop it.

SUPER FUN! Creative and innovative! I rented this movie after seeing the Director's Oscar winning movie, PARASITE. Just as awesome. I'm a fan.

I think this is a better than average film. I think it is totally worth the watch as a fun monster/action/black comedy movie with one or two friends who are also into those forms of fun. Popcorn or other snacks would be helpful. It is a well-made movie that doesn't take itself completely seriously as philosophy or social critique, yet provides some of those things with grace and effective subtlety. The first 20-30 minutes are a wonderful riot. The final 20 minutes or so are also well-done and worth getting to, for sure.

Wow...this film is hilarious on so many levels. It's incredibly dark humor, of course, since it's also a horror film.... Mainly, I'm left in awe after watching it. The creativity of the plot, the great acting, the level of humor...this film is truly amazing. And it's quite interesting in light of the COVID-19 stuff.

Original title is "Gwoemul == Monster." Film opens with an action packed 20 minutes to introduce the individuals in a Korean family of four and one giant deformed creature in the waterways near Wonhyo Bridge over the Han River in Seoul. As other films by writer/director Bong Joon-ho as Parasite, it is a social satire that South Korean government is inept and, in this film, ordinary citizens are on their own fighting environmentally damaging foreign interest and a marine man-eater. For the connection to the title "The Host," see "Quotes."

Other good to excellent movies from Bong Joon-ho:

Parasite (2019) ★★★
Sea Fog (Haemoo 2014) ★★★★
Snowpiercer (2013) ★★★
Mother (Madeo 2009) ★★★
Barking dogs never bite (Flandersui gae 2000) ★★★

Points for the novel creature and some of its stage entries. Despite the title, parasitism is not involved.

Interesting that the only westerners portrayed are the evil slob who instructs an underling to pour toxic chemicals down the sink, and a military hero.

I think the film could have been better the beastiet had been collecting humans as pets, not as food. But this is a Korean flick. Everything is food. It's a little hard to feel sorry for the main characters who feel victimized by the creatures, while they sell squid as food, and had animal heads on their office wall.

Some of the acting reminded me of that anime swill. The extras are worth watching for insights into Asian culture.

Pretty mediocre overall, although the creature was kind of interesting.

This film is an interesting blend of comedy and the horror genre. It doesn't completely stray from its foundation as a drama / "creature feature," but there are also some really funny bits. The effects are a little iffy (but the film had a pretty low budget; only $10M - which is high for Korean standards, but still), but the cinematography itself is fabulous. Good film, worth the watch.

Darkly comedic monster movie with original creature design and protagonists worth rooting for.

The "host" connection to the story, also posted in IMDb:

February 9, 2000 ...
Formaldehyde, to be precise. To be even more precise, dirty formaldehyde. Every bottle is coated with layers of dust. Pour them into the sink.
-Excuse me?
Just empty every bottle to the very last drop.
-It's just... They are toxic chemicals, and the regulations states that...
Pour them right down the drain, Mr. Kim.
-If I pour them in the drain... they will run into the Han River.
That's right. Let's just dump them in the Han River.
-But, you know, this is not just any toxic chemicals... The Han River is... very broad, Mr. Kim. Let's try to be... broad-minded about this. Anyway... that's an order.

The "host" connection to the story, NOT posted in IMDb as of today:

After a thorough examination... U.S. Army medical staff have identified... an unknown virus, primarily in body parts...
The U.S. Army has shipped a sample of the virus... to the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control... which confirmed that the creature from the Han River... as with the Chinese civet wildcat and SARS... is the host of this deadly new virus.
Agent Yellow, which has been chosen for use here in Korea... is a state-of-the-art chemical and deployment system... recently developed by the U.S. To fight virus outbreaks... or biological terror.
