Alice Hoffman captures the voice of a young woman in Shelby. To me the theme of this book wasforgiveness.

Faithful is the tale of Shelby, a teenager who survives a horrific car accident that leaves her best friend in a coma and Shelby with depression, survivor’s guilt, and PTSD. Her promising young life takes an abrupt swerve into the dark and unknown, and we follow Shelby along into adulthood.

It’s a simple story, really, and driven mostly by the mere passing of Shelby’s years. But it’s beautiful. I said “tale” earlier, because it’s not just a story about a woman, it’s a tale of redemption, of forgiveness, of romance and of mothers and daughters. Just a whisper around the edges of a fairy tale element – some symbolism, for those on the lookout for that sort of thing, and slow, gradual progress from unhappy to happy.

For those who like sad but happy books, rescuing stray dogs, complicated female characters, and Chinese takeout. I loved it. (Submitted by Veronica).

Once in a while you read a book that may seem like a slog at first. Or it may seem as though you are only reading to get to the end and find out what happens. But this is Alice Hoffman . . . and the plot twist took me by surprise and truly jerked the tears right out of my eyes. There's a reason her genre is called "magical realism". Hold on, keep reading, and it will all come together with great emotional power. I plan to read it again.

You're 17 and your best friend is killed in a horrific car accident. You were driving. Traumatized and consumed by guilt, Shelby retreats, into the basement and full-blown depression, smoking pot for relief. Mysterious anonymous postcards arrive, and ever so slowly Shelby begins her slow climb back to normalcy. She runs off with her drug dealer, rescuing dogs and children along the way. And the magical healing begins.

Read it in one day. Best book I’ve read in awhile. Very satisfying read.

Faithful is one of my favourite reads of the year. Shelby survives a car accident that leaves her best friend in a near vegetative state. Her guilt from that night looms over her life for years to come, even as life pushes her into living tiny bit by tiny bit. The novel covers life, death, love, and heartbreak ... you'll cry, and you'll rejoice.

Enjoyed this one. An easy read..kept you guessing as to outcome of characters. Yes, some parts predictable but still enjoyable.

Ten years ago, Shelby walked away from an accident that put her best friend in a coma. She can’t seem to move on and grow up and have a life - something that Helene will never have.

Alice Hoffman tells the story of guilt ridden Shelby Richmond in the novel "Faithful." It was so powerful it just about broke my heart. Shelby is driving when the car skids. She is alive but her best friend Helene becomes a vegetable and lies lifeless in a coma. Shelby blames herself. Her life is turned inside out. From a successful student she becomes a loser. She has to find her way in life again. She does so with the help of her loving mother and an unknown angel. She learns that love is the only thing that matters. She believes everybody should have ESP so that everyone will know what everyone else is thinking and maybe people wouldn't hurt each other so much. She finds a best friend with three children she finds dogs who need her. Will she find true love?

I am a huge fan of Alice Hoffman's work but this novel left me wanting. It felt a bit predictable (something I have never said about any of her books!) and the main character hard to cheer for. A good enough read but not what I have come to expect from this incredibly gifted storyteller.
