This 2015 film gives a surprising view of parts of Syria controlled by Assad. Urban areas look modern and inviting. That's probably how the rest of the country looked before the rebellion that we sponsored. Homs, which Assad lost and regained, is largely destroyed.
There are many engaging scenes: comfortable hotels, attractive women in Western clothes, a high fashion show, a beach with bikini-clad sunbathers, a symphony orchestra playing Brahms. Regime officials are eager to show the realities suppressed in US media. They hope to rebuild pre-war tourism.
They denied that Assad had fired on peaceful demonstrators, and provided evidence to prove it. They blamed the Saudis, as headchopping barbarians.
Syrian civilians upheld Assad and blamed our rebels for the ravagement of their country. Some wept in recounting their losses. No one wanted to oust Assad, which would leave the country to total destruction by fanatics. One grizzled pro-Assad militia leader said he did not want his daughters sold into slavery by Islamic State. He blamed the US, Israel, and Turkey.
Why did we target the secular, Westernized Assad, an ophthalmologist, and support jihadists, at the cost of hundreds of thousands of Syrian lives? No doubt to please Israel by crushing a rival allied to Iran, and to dislodge Russia from its Mediterranean bases.
The rebels we support are probably fighting to end the Western lifestyle described above, and reduce the women to servitude.
If we call off our assault, many Syrian refugees would probably return from Europe, easing difficulties there. But that would mean admitting we have been wrong for years, which our current leaders would never do.

Interesting. There appears to be at least 3 different factions. Can't tell who's telling the truth. Its probably a little truth and some lies on all their parts.

Quite interesting to see Syria after the breakout of the civil.
