On California's fog-hung North Coast, the enchanted redwood groves of Vineland County harbor a wild assortment of sixties survivors and refugees from the "Nixonian Reaction," still struggling with the consequences of their past lives. Aging hippie freak Zoyd Wheeler is revving up for his annual act of televised insanity when news reaches that his old nemesis, sinister federal agent Brock Vond, has come storming into Vineland at the head of a heavily armed Justice Department strike force. Zoyd instantly disappears underground, but not before dispatching his teenage daughter Prairie on a dark odyssey into her secret, unspeakable past.

This is the 3rd of Pynchon's books that I've attempted to read. The fist was Gravity's Rainbow which I gave up on after about 100 pages. The second was Inherent Vice which I actually enjoyed and did finish. And then there's Vineland. I can't even begin to describe what it's about but I found the writing so detailed and dense that it just tired me out after awhile. After 182 pages I just lost interest in continuing with it. I know Pynchon is loved by many for his complex, convoluted plots and infinite regressions but for me it's just too much. I really prefer Philip K. Dick who has been described as the poor man's Pynchon. Or William Burroughs (who mentioned in an interview that Gravity's Rainbow was pretty tough to read and who probably didn't finish it either) or Samuel Beckett or any number of other authors. This one starts out interesting but in my humble opinion it could stand a lot of editing.

An easier read for me than some of his other works, this one moves along nicely and allows the reader either to skim or probe more deeply as desired.
