The ghost war commenced mysteriously but slowly. Although it wasn’t as expected, the affection between Wells and Jennifer Exley had been conspicuous; more apparent from Exley’s side – only once from Wells telephone call. Nonetheless, Jennifer Exley’s involvement in Well’s escape had been astounding. Considerable political conflict between Li Ping and Cao Se became palpable. It was unfortunate that Cao Se had to die in the end. Nonetheless, the torture that Wells confronted was disputable.. it would have appeared more realistic had the two been caught during their escape. The story’s culmination should have focused more on Wells and Exley than the other characters.

The Ghost War is a sequel to The Faithful Spy and is intricately plotted as all good spy stories are. In this one a rogue Chinese general is plotting to undermine the US and humiliate the US. Action takes place in Afghanistan and mainland China leading to a spectacular climax. The series is similar to Vince Flynn’s Mitch Rapp series but the characters are more complex.

Not as good as Berenson's other books!

I'd never heard of Berenson, but his modern spy novels are compelling and taut. Lots of action and smart motivations. Good characters. Don't know how I missed this author all along, but I'm glad I have a number of books to catch up on!
