Absolutely terrible! One of the very worst films ever. Not scary at all. That annoying little bastard was utterly loathsome. Yes, kids stress their parents, but by making the child completely insufferable the director lost control of her film. Earlier reviews that claim heavy symbolism and that invite comparisons to "The Turn of the Screw" are laughable and absurd. Watch a real horror film instead.

I normally don't watch many "horror" flicks, but I watched this after viewing director Jennifer Kent's current great flick "Nightingale." This was an excellent "horror" film, but really was it a nightmare, creeping mental illness, or was Babadook real? The fact that it may have been a film related to insanity brought on by guilt helped make it more that just a run of the mill horror flick. Wikipedia suggests that this film is much more than it appears to be.

This movie wasn’t my favourite. The characters weren’t likeable especially the boy and even the mom was unlikable, she really has to punish her kid sometimes. The monster was the most likeable character in the movie. Additionally, the monster looked pretty fake, cool but definitely fake. It really only got kind of interesting near the end. The Babadook book was really cool though, the best part. Also, some parts were funny but overall I didn’t really like this movie. Good soundtrack though.

Nice little film. Plods along but the quality of story makes up for it. Not that scary but amusing.

Although I truly enjoyed this movie we had pause and rewind a lot due to "skipping over damaged area" po-ups.

I watched it for the first time on Halloween 2019.
I think it is much more than a horror movie. Heavy with symbolism. I really liked it.

It's not a movie of gore. It's not a movie of jump scares. It's a movie of eerie soundtracks over long, dark camera angles which, from watching all the other movies, we know are set-ups for jump scares, and which leave viewers tense with anticipation that is not fully resolved through the expected fright. This scene-crafting early combines with fleshed-out emotional and social anguish for both the main characters which all blends into a taut 'confront your inner demons' and 'confront our outer demons' crescendo to leave a satisfying yet not truly 'happy' ending. The acting is good. My only complaint is the degree to which the primary character has refused to seek professional help for her emotional anguish for years after it has set in. It's realistic, I suppose, yet frustrating. Would have been for her son, too, perhaps; hence the movie.

There's so much going on here. It's a horror movie, yes, and it's scary, sure, but it has a lot to say about motherhood, families and society. I thought the ending was especially rich with insight.

****SPOILERS****

I can't rate this higher because the dog dies, but it's a very good scary movie.
