As women and children sicken and die, midwife Bridget Hodgson is pulled against her will into a full-scale witch-hunt that threatens to devour all in its path, guilty and innocent alike. Bridget--accompanied once again by her deputy Martha Hawkins and her nephew Will Hodgson--finds herself playing a lethal game of cat and mouse against the most dangerous men in York, as well as her sworn enemy Rebecca Hooke. I'm enjoying this series about a gentlewoman/midwife and her servant and deputy in training. They live in difficult times that are rife with superstition and ignorance. Bridget has suffered many losses in her life but works to help women and people in need as well as solving murders along the way. Her family becomes embroiled in the happenings of the times and she does her best in helping them survive.
I found this one the best in the series so far, and I'm anxious to see what becomes of Lady Hodgson and her household in the next installment.
Well written and researched.
It's best to read this series in order.
