With so many suspects and a lack of significant clues (especially the identity of the deceased), will Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck be able to apprehend the murderer without interfering with his forthcoming marriage to Madeleine Andrews? Edward Marston has written another fast-paced, intricate crime thriller and police procedural in Exeter on the Great Western Railroad.

If I knew how to give a book five stars, I'd give the Stationmaster's Farewell" all I could. I like period mysteries, and this is one of the most enjoyable I've read. It sets the stage in 1857 Wales without bogging the reader down with details and color. The reader can see the author's cinematic background coming through in the crisp segues between scenes. I found this very readable and engrossing. I'm putting others by Marston on reserve to read more.

Everyone loves the stationmaster, who leads a lonely life, since his wife died, but only the waitress in the café would he trust with his beloved canary, when he was away from home. It is she who helps Colbeck and Leeming to find the murderer among several suspects, who want his money, his position, or his love.

"'An owl, a canary, a missing diary, a bonfire, an angry bishop, a well-known thug on the loose, a crazed female in a revolting display of blasphemy - this is the most bizarre case in which I've ever been involved', said [Scotland Yard Superintendent Edward] Tallis. 'One is bound to wonder what comes next.'"
