When professional house-sitter Lila Emerson witnesses a murder/suicide from her current apartment-sitting job, life as she knows it takes a dramatic turn. Suddenly, the woman with no permanent ties finds herself almost wishing for one. Artist Ashton Archer knows his brother isn't capable of violence--against himself or others. He recruits Lila, the only eyewitness, to help him uncover what happened. Ash longs to paint her as intensely as he hungers to touch her. But their investigation draws them into a rarefied circle where priceless antiques are bought, sold, gambled away, and stolen, where what you possess is who you are, and where what you desire becomes a deadly obsession.

This is my first Nora Roberts book. I enjoyed it.

Nora Roberts has never been a favorite of mine, but when I want something easy, her writing has been OK. I thought she generally did a good job of capturing the essence of a place and the people who might live there. And that was enough to pull me in and through her stories. Her suspense wasn't top-notch, but was enough to make the stories somewhat interesting. This is the second book in a row, though, that has been fairly dull. I only stuck with it because it was an audiobook, so it was easy to turn on when I was doing a task needing some mental distraction. I'm not a big romance person, and the romance in this story was especially, well, stupid for lack of a better word. I really didn't see the draw between Lila and Ash other than their shared interest in figuring out who murdered his brother. There's a moment in the book when she wonders what they will have when life gets back to normal, if that same connection will be there. And of course, because it's a Nora Roberts novel it will be. But if this was the real world, I'd give them 6 months. I think the only really appeal to Ash is all his money. Otherwise I found him a bit creepy.

OK, enough of a rant. I have one more NR book in my lineup to try, but if it's a dud, I'm pretty sure it'll be my last!

Not up to her usual standard I think.,. It is full of graphic violence and quite disturbing. I would not recommend it.

I was unfortunately a bit underwhelmed by this and it almost 100% stems from the fact that it was too long. If Nora would have cut it down to even 400 pages instead of almost 500, it would have made a world of difference. By the time I got to the end, I didn't care that much anymore.

certainly better than her latest trilogy series, but still a bit humdrum. Sort of a fun romance story, but needs a bit more suspense. The HAG assassin was stereotypical, as was the collector. Lila, the heroine was likable, as were her friends.

I enjoyed the story but I couldn't help but imagine a different ending.

This is a fun read. I found the lead male character far more interesting than Lila (female lead) but this is far more of a fantasy novel than mystery and intrigue. Some sections are down right silly but mostly, I couldn't put it down.

I really wanted to like this book, but found the characters to be shallow and boring. Plot was a bit far-fetched, with the characters being stereotypical cliches of good vs. bad. Random trips thrown in, with all of a sudden family connections to move the plot forward led to a mediocre storyline.

This was yet another fabulous Nora Roberts novel! The story was lengthy, woven with intrigue, and hard to put down. Definitely a great book for summer.

The story was longer than it needed to be. Some scenarios almost too crazy to be true. Main characters are well written and evenly matched. Always a fan of Nora Roberts books
