There is no privacy and security for people's lives, especially those not computer savvy, when connected to the internet which has been infested with cyber malwares, identity thieves, sex traffickers, cyberbullies and fake news sources etc. This film provides some common cases with devastating impact on crime victims, none with easy solutions when the movie was released and none to date.

Whether you take the title of Henry Alex Rubin’s hardwired drama to be a passive noun or imperative command depends on your own point of view but one thing is for certain: each one of his characters is broken in some way be it emotionally, financially, or morally. And in this age of the Internet, where reaching out to another human being has become a mechanical keyboard shortcut, their various attempts to connect more often than not achieve the exact opposite. Beautifully filmed, with chatroom text often superimposed over intimate close-ups as if to accentuate the degrees of separation between them, Rubin’s characters are perpetually logged in yet tuned out to the real people within arm’s reach. At one point a hospital monitor displays ghostlike images of a dying brain and you realize this could just as easily be a youtube curio. Regrettably, what could have been a great film is marred by a montage of slow-motion clips accompanied by crashing waves of passionate strings as Rubin tries to tie all his loose thread together in a series of highly unlikely (though dramatically cathartic) resolutions. After two hours of slow steady build-up this style of emotional manipulation comes across as studied and facile. Good performances from the likes of Jason Bateman and Alexander Skarsgård however, and the diverse soundtrack of grunge and chamber pieces seem oddly complimentary.

Highly recommended, especially for parents. This movie is about communicating, especially with those you value in your life. Or perhaps more accurately, the breakdown of that communication; the "disconnect". One of the dangers of technology today is the extent to which we assume it can replace person-to-person contact. Online anonymity has allowed an unprecedented level of irresponsibility, lack of empathy, and bullying. Technology is supposed to be a TOOL to ASSIST in communicating, not a replacement. Even communications COMPANIES have lost sight of that.

Watching this is about as boring as sitting around a table while everyone maintains their online profiles. While this disconnect was obviously the point of the film, the director just failed to make me care about any of these characters.

Wonderful script with great actors. The plot grows in natural ways that are extremely plausible, giving the watcher a sense of realism not found in many films. Will watch it again.

This is very depressing, but worth watching. Not stellar acting, but the premise is good enough. This movie reminded me of my last experience in a doctor’s waiting room. There was a father and two daughters, both not older than 11, I assume. The three of them barely exchanged a word, for all were completely absorbed typing in their little gadgets. While I love technology, it is allowing a complete disconnect, especially between parents and their kids. Not only they have surrendered raising their kids to third parties (schools, libraries, malls), they have also removed themselves from dialogue with them. This specific movie is an eye opener and should be watched by all parents. Maybe they will realize that it is still not late and they can take back their kids’ lives? The problem is that it takes time and a lot of dedication—exactly as it was when mothers used to stay home and take care of their kids. No, the world was not perfect, but children were taken care of by their own family. Nice time, that was…

Sad and scary, dark and depressing at times, and knowing it's based on true stories makes it all the more devastating when we witness the consequences of our seemingly-innocuous actions when entering a chat room, looking for virtual companionship, playing a childish practical joke, or putting our personal information online.

Excellent movie. Quite an emotional roller coaster. A must see for anyone who uses technology, even for people who do not. How becoming socially disconnected can affect our lives.

Get through the first 15 min...it's worth it.

For anyone who uses social media or anyone who knows someone who uses social media - guess this is most everyone - this is an eye opener. What a person does affects other people whether they are aware of it or not. When a person is very involved in communicating on a device, what are they disconnecting from in their surroundings? What are they missing? This movie will shine a light on this question.

While I was watching the movie I thought to myself, "I have no idea how this will end." That is valuable to me.
