Clearly an extremely capable individual, Mr Whitaker could have given more details of his business activities in ATT and GM. To a certain extent the book is spoiled by an excessively folksy tone, whether from Mr Whitaker or his ghost writer.

Whitacre was a pretty short-lived CEO at GM, and again it is important to note he was appointed by President Obama, not promoted to that position. Whitacre was (and may still be) a longtime member of the Peterson Institute, whose agenda is the destruction of Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, the offshoring of as many American jobs as possible and America's adherence to the WTO's Financial Services Agreement. Whitacre is credited with reconstituting AT&T (assuming it was really split up, if only on paper), so today it is bigger and stronger than ever, stridently promoting the end of network neutrality. Also, keep in mind that during Whitacre's time, the telephone corporation buried quite a number of technological advances from their Bell Labs, fearing it would have interfered with their profits, when we know today it would have greatly increased it! Obviously, I am not impressed with Whitacre's book, nor his business career. (On the boards of ExxonMobil and BNSF - - well that should endear him to many?)
