Poignant story of unrequited love, set in 17th century France. Highlighted by the Oscar-winning performance of José Ferrer as Cyrano, the long-nosed poet and swordsman who helps a handsome rival woo and win the beautiful Roxane, whom Cyrano himself secretly loves.

So - What can I possibly say (on a positive note) about a movie whose story's main focus was placed upon the size of a guy's bulbous nose?

Set in Paris, France during the mid-17th century - This picture's plot-line paid way too much attention to the title character's phallic-looking snout and (IMO) the remainder of this tale (what there was of it) suffered significantly as a direct result of this kind of nonsense.

Anyway - This 1950, b&w production certainly left a whole lot to be desired. See for yourself.

Well - Let me tell ya - I found Cyrano's bulbous snout to be such an irksome appendage (which seemed to be forever protruding into my face) that it didn't take long for it to be the one thing that completely detracted me away from paying attention to what was going on in this film's story.

It's true.

And, with that said - I found myself secretly hoping that Cyrano would get the opportunity to passionately kiss some delicious dish - 'Cause (with such a bulging nose as his) I totally wanted to see how he would be directed to handle such an awkward situation in a dignified manner.

But, alas - This scenario involving a kiss never happened (much to my total dismay).

Anyway - This b&w, low-budget production from 1950 (which was completed on just $400,000) - Won actor, Jose Ferrer an Oscar for his portrayal of Cyrano (the man who just couldn't keep his big nose out of other people's business).

One of my favorites with a classic performance by Jose Ferrer, that can bring one to tears. Very highly recommended!

Great movie, but this Alphavideo transfer to DVD is unwatchable. Audio out of synch, many scenes overly contrasty or too dark. The library should replace this with one of the better ones out there.

Jose Ferrer became the first Hispanic to earn an Academy Award for his performance in "Cyrano De Bergerac". This is a touching movie and although done later by others, this is the movie that best captures the character of Cyrano De Bergerac. This is a classic play and movie and one should really try not to miss it. It one of the most outstanding American Films ever produced!
