How I enjoyed this as a series in the '80's. Mitchum was almost always great as playing his characters with the undercurrent attitude. He was a classic. Once I looked further into the life of JMV, I could hardly watch the remainder, what a tragic turn of life. McGraw was a pitiful actor.

Good movie. Accurate historically. Ali McGraw who is/was a very poor actress, was miscast as was was Jan Michael Vincent. Both were popular at the time the film was made. The rest of the cast was terrific.

A 1980s made-for-TV mini-series that I enjoyed way more than I thought I would. Six DVDs, so plan your watch time. I love Robert Mitchum in anything, including this story about an American Naval family facing WWII.

Even after 35 years, it's still an entertaining movie.
Ali Magraw (spelling wrong, I know) was the only one that stood out as "acting", everyone else made you really believe it was 1939 - 1941.

Very likely, the best TV mini-series ever produced. A real masterpiece for the small screen. I'd recommend to watch the series first, then read the book. Strangely enough, it works better this way.

Winds of War might be described as TV's last great hurrah. It came out in the 80's just before VCR's {remember them?} and rental movies. It has a great cast, a great stirring music theme and great locations-especially Yugoslavia filling in for Europe during the Second World War .
This series was a TV event and had folks staying in "glued" to their TV's. Cost big $$ and they sure don't make like 'em like this anymore.

If you are older, from the Military or were a Univesity History Student you know about these issues. Watch this Movie! And tell me what you think is going on? I think it's worth more than only a Pulitzer Prize for Cinematography. It's really a
fantastik movie!
