Director Satyajit Ray brilliantly evokes the crumbling opulence of the world of a fallen aristocrat desperately clinging to his way of life. His greatest joy is the music room in which he has hosted lavish concerts over the years, now a shadow of its former vivid self. An incandescent depiction of the clash between tradition and modernity, and a showcase for some of India's most popular musicians of the day, The Music Room is a defining work by the great Bengali filmmaker.

A very touching film about the dangerous traps of excessive nostalgia; uses music perfectly.

There are only a handful filmmakers who can give an intriguing story with any theme or any actors(of any age). After Ingmar Bergman's "Wild Strawberries" with a theme revolving around a 70 year old this movie cheered me with a befallen landlord who should be around 50. Watch this movie if you like Classical Indian music with instruments like Shenai, Sitar, Tabla. And I forgot to tell something, there is an amazing show of Kathak dance in the movie which would glue our eyes to the screen.

The great Indian director Satyajit Ray made this between the second and third parts of his famed Apu Trilogy. While those films dealt with the poor, this is a lyrical and elegiac story of an aging landowner and his fading way of life, which is centered around holding fabulous concerts in the title room. Ray broke with the tradition in Indian films by integrating the music and dance into the story rather than using it in a stylistic, fantastic manner. If you don't like Indian music, be warned that there are frequent, long musical sequences. Released in 1958 and in Bengali.

A fascinating masterpiece. I enjoyed India's great classical music as if first-rate jazz, Rock n Roll.
