With her greatest enemy dead, and on her way to be reunited with the family she'd been stolen from long ago, Yelena should be pleased. But though she has gained her freedom, she can't help feeling isolated in Sitia. Her Ixian background has changed her in many ways--and her newfound friends and relatives don't think it's for the better....

Despite the turmoil, she's eager to start her magic training--especially as she's been given one year to harness her power or be put to death. But her plans take a radical turn when she becomes involved with a plot to reclaim Ixia's throne for a lost prince--and gets entangled in powerful rivalries with her fellow magicians.

If that wasn't bad enough, it appears her brother would love to see her dead. Luckily, Yelena has some old friends to help her with all her new enemies....

It’s great seeing Yelena’s power grow. I really liked the idea of the Sandseed clan’s abilities/culture. I didn’t love the way most of the relationships evolved (and devolved), but it was still enjoyable to witness the changes. I really want to understand Yelena’s connection with Valek. I hope the next book will delve into it deeper.

So, I'm not sure Magic Study needed to be this lengthy.

It's a curious mix this book, and it's not really working. As with the previous one, Magic Study left me wanting in the romance department. I want the camaraderie and the partnership that I witnessed among Yelena, Valek, Aric and Janco in Poison Study. I don't want Yelena to be all powerful, all knowing. It's so boring.

Amazingly, I liked this second book in the series better than the first! Snyder did a good job of showing more dynamic aspects of Yelena, and developing her friendships with other minor characters. While I still sometimes feel like Yelena is overly invincible, I'm enjoying the interplay of politics and emotion in this series.

Continuation of the series begun in Poison Study.

This book was just as good as the first! I find it so interesting how she falls in love with the man who has tried to kill her. I love how Valek calls her "love". He is most certainly my favourite character in the book.

As entertaining as the first one. Full of complicated plots, characters to love, and descriptions of human cruelty. Even more than the first though, this one will leave you craving book three.

It was only after watching him disappear into the darkness that I realized I stood with my switchblade clutched in my right hand. But I hadn’t triggered the blade. The south was making me soft.

He kissed me and I clung to him for a moment, wishing we could run away and forget about soul-stealing magicians and Cahil. But that wasn't for us. Dealing with prisoners, schemers and killers seemed to be our lot in life. Besides, we would probably grow bored living in safety without any problems to worry about. But still I wished for it.
