Unbelievable to have to watch. Glad I didn't see it in the theater. Gritty and uncomfortable from the start to finish with the a lot of " I have to get up and leave the room" moments in-between. Hally had guts to take this role…not many women of ANY color would not quease at this script. I can see why she got the award for this one…she is truly an amazing actress.
Sean's role was also an uncomfortable moment to watch- his reflected on about 100 years of a black mans role in this country…he has acting chops- I don't understand why he didn't go further with this talent. And don't forget that HEATH LEDGER had a small role in this one…however terrifying. God Bless his soul. Even though I own this movie as a VHS…I have only watched it once. Thats enough.

I found the performance of Billy Bob Thornton impressive and Peter Boyle reliable. I wouldn't vote Halle Berry for Oscar for this. I don't think her performance was not matured as much her ambition for Oscar.

Cannot believe Halle Berry won an Oscar for this. Punishing, grim and very unpleasant.

A deeply introspective film, it's truly difficult for me to say whether or not I liked this film. Its raw emotion seemed to overshadow much of it, sacrificing a range in plot points, but I do appreciate the heart-wrenching performances from the entire cast, demonstrating how some actors can reach way beyond, breaking the mold, to convey something as dark and gritty as the characters here in such a beautiful way. It is quite a moody film to tackle, but for the right audience, I would recommend it.
